You might be a native-born Canadian returning from a period of study or deployment abroad. Instead, it could be that you’ve long since settled here. Consider the following situations:

  • Veterans from the Canadian Armed Forces or other NATO Member States might be able to use their certified translations to qualify for existing or future discounts or exemptions.
  • When a child is born, it’s vital to retrieve the certified translation of the father’s and/or mother’s birth certificate to claim Canadian citizenship or from another country.
  • To continue their career in British Columbia, for instance, nurses and teachers will need to submit certified translations of their diplomas and/or transcripts for assessment by the relevant regulatory bodies.

Vitally Important

As you can see, the value of a certified translation is lasting. But it also has to meet the strict requirements set by most educational institutions and regulatory bodies. That includes:

  • accurately conveying the meaning of the contents contained in the original document.
  • adequately reflecting the layout of the translation in the source text.
  • consisting of three contingent parts – the translator’s declaration, the translation itself and a copy of the original – plus the certified translator’s stamp, signature and initials, where appropriate.

Needless to say, certified translations can be vitally important not only for your applications but also for your job search. That might be problematic for individuals whose credentials and documents are issued in what we would consider to be exotic languages. In those rare cases, ask us for advice. Together with you, we will determine what the best options are to meet IRCC’s minimum requirements.

For most of the world’s languages, however, the best option is to hire an applied linguist who:

  • has the requisite training and qualifications to translate your credentials and other documents properly the first time
  • provides a Quality Assurance clause in the translation agreement that his/her work will be done in accordance with industry standards and the relevant professional code of conduct.
